If you are a moderate to heavy drinker the answer is very quickly. Take for example someone who drinks a bottle of wine each evening to de-stress after work.
A bottle of wine is around 635 calories. 5 of those for after work drinking is 3175 calories.
Now assuming they do not drink anything at the weekend (big assumption), and assuming the alcohol doesn’t change food choice (again big assumption) then this example person is set to lose 0.9 pounds a week or roughly 4 pounds a month.
Calculating how quickly you will lose weight
Take how much you drink over the course of a week (in calories) and divide it by 3500. This is how much you can lose in body fat per week by cutting out the booze.
Notes:
- This assumes that you are currently maintaining weight through consumption. If you are gaining weight then the amount of weight you gain will be offset by the above result. Similarly if you are losing weight the amount of weight you lose will be enhanced by the above result.
- This is just body fat. You are also likely to lose some water weight when you quit drinking.
- This doesn’t take into account dietary changes. I know when I quit drinking I stopped eating as much crap as I used to.
