The End of the PARTY LINE: How Lily Allen Overcame Her Problem With Alcoholism
Once you turn into an addict, that’s it isn’t it?
We don’t think so.
Because Lily Allen proved otherwise.
Being as open as she’s ever been, the famous singer/songwriter posted on her Instagram a celebration picture of her sobering up.
According to her, she’s finally gone off the booze which reflected on her health and her appearance for the past several years.

With a long list of hit songs like F*** You, Knock ‘Em Out, Not Fair, Smile, and many more, it is no question that Allen successfully climbed her way up to the top of pop culture back in 2006.
But more than her success as a singer/songwriter and musician, the popstar also gathered a lot of attention with her antics— being caught rather intoxicated on a number of occasions or heavily drinking during celebrity events back in her heydays.
Recently, in an interview with GQ, the singer openly admitted that at the peak of her career, she could consume up to one bottle of Grey Goose vodka on a daily basis when she was on tour. She became so addicted to alcohol that she got to a point where she couldn’t even tell the difference between a vodka and a bottle of water.
But despite her alcoholic tendencies, the singer told in the interview that she wasn’t really into drinking alcohol at first. Instead, she admitted that she was more into taking drugs.
“I’d never really been a drinker before. I’d always been a drug taker, and the drinking was an accessory to doing drugs. I realized, ‘Oh, fuck, I haven’t taken any drugs for ages, but I’m drinking a lot’. I was drinking a bottle of Grey Goose a day. It was really bad.”
And it only got worse from there.
Why did she continue drinking?
It was not unknown to the public that the singer was going through a very sad phase where nothing was seemingly going according to her plans. This includes her marriage with her then-husband Sam Cooper, who is the father of her two lovely kids.
The popstar told in a public interview during her album promotion that the divorce was indeed very disappointing for her and she was deeply sad about it, but she said that it is best to keep it that way between the two of them.
“Yeah, it was really sad. If I didn’t think I was going to be married forever, I wouldn’t have married. It’s a disappointment, but I think it was the right decision and it was necessary, and ultimately, I just want to make a safe and secure environment for my kids, and that was ironically the best way of doing that.”
With Age Comes Wisdom
When asked a question about her decision to sober up, she answered it very simply and went straight to the point. According to her, the reason why she stopped drinking is because she was old.
“I think it was age. Waking up in a tour bus, really hungover with makeup running — it’s not a good look when you’re 30. It’s okay when you’re 19!” she said.
The singer then said that she gave up drugs completely, but still occasionally drinks a bottle of wine for dinner.
“I don’t take drugs anymore. I wouldn’t say I gave up drinking, because I might like, once in a blue moon, have a glass of wine at dinner. But I don’t party anymore.”
Thanks to you, Weirdo Stalker!
While most alcoholics gave up their addiction through their own terms, Allen stopped hers because of a highly unusual, unconventional reason – stalking.
The first moment that she decided to stop drinking was a little bit forced as the popstar had to completely isolate herself from everyone as she was being followed by a mysterious person everywhere she went.
“That’s more because I had a stalker in the U.K….about 2½ years ago. The fallout from that meant I just stopped socializing, actually. I just became very isolated. So I just don’t really go out.”
…ultimately stopping her wild party days altogether.
Reaching out for help
Since then, Allen confessed that she attended some Alcohol Anonymous (AA) meetings and it was shown to be giving her a very huge boost, “I did my 90 meetings and 90 days, so I did do that, and I went through that process, and I found it really helpful.” the singer proudly said.
How is she today?
Today, the singer is enjoying a new chapter of her life. Successfully overcoming the struggles she faced in the past, Allen is now continuously moving forward and embracing the role of being a mom to her two kids.
“Your life is not yours anymore, simple as that, ” the singer said with a face filled with smiles. “Your freedom is gone — in a beautiful way. And it makes you think about being a human in a different way.”
Eager to be the best mother that she could be, Allen expressed how much she wants her children to grow and be better than she was back in her childhood, “You’ve got these little brains that need to be nurtured! I’ve never really been good socially; in fact, that’s probably why I drank and did drugs back in the day because I found relationships with people quite difficult.
As she went on telling her insights, Allen told the interviewers how motherhood changed her, highlighting her children’s role in helping her become a better person, “Actually, having kids has really helped me with that. It’s forced me to learn about how humans interact with each other in its most basic form.”
And that’s only the start of her recovery journey. Aside from being a full-time mom, Allen also delighted her fans by creating an album entitled No Shame back in 2018, which brought us right back to the early 2000’s. This earned her a nomination at Mercury Prize Awards and is known to be one of the most successful comebacks in recent history.
The singer/songwriter also got her hands into writing, releasing her autobiography entitled My Thoughts Exactly. In this tell-all memoir, Allen unapologetically shared the memories of her past for readers to have a glimpse of the good, the bad, and ugly of celebrity life. My Thoughts Exactly has been very well accepted by the public, even hitting No. 1 as a Sunday Times Bestseller.
With all the good things coming her way, the star has been more radiant than she’s ever been, finally recovering from her all-time low. The famous star is now back on track and is currently better than ever, saying that her sobriety helped her think “a lot more clearly” which is very much evident in her latest milestone as her recent album continues to give us a glimpse of her old self but in an older, wiser version.
