Danny Trejo Sobriety: Prison, Addiction and 58 Years Clean

Written by Mike Jacobsen.

How long has Danny Trejo been sober?

Danny Trejo has said he got clean and sober in 1968 while incarcerated. By 2026, that recovery spans about 58 years, making his one of the longest-running sobriety stories in the celebrity world.

The extraordinary part is that recovery came long before acting. Trejo was helping other people with addiction when a visit to a film set unexpectedly opened the door to Hollywood.

Danny Trejo’s sobriety timeline

  • Trejo is exposed to drugs very young and later becomes involved in crime and repeated incarceration.
  • 1968: While in prison, he reaches a turning point and gets sober.
  • 1969: He leaves prison and continues attending recovery meetings.
  • Trejo becomes involved in helping people with addiction and working as a counsellor.
  • 1985: He visits a film set to support someone struggling with recovery and is offered work on Runaway Train.
  • 2023: Trejo publicly celebrates 55 years sober.
  • 2026: His recovery is approaching six decades.

Getting sober before he believed he had a future

Trejo has described a childhood and young adulthood shaped by drugs, violence, crime and prison. At one point he did not expect to get out of prison, let alone become an actor.

His commitment in 1968 was therefore not a celebrity reinvention. There was no career to save. Recovery came first.

Why helping other people became central

After prison, Trejo stayed connected to recovery and began helping people with addiction. He has repeatedly said that many of the good things in his life grew from trying to help somebody else.

That idea eventually produced the strangest career break imaginable. He went to the set of Runaway Train to support someone who was struggling and was noticed by the filmmakers because of his background and boxing experience.

A Hollywood career that grew out of recovery

Trejo’s acting career was therefore not something recovery rescued. Recovery helped create the circumstances in which the career existed at all.

Decades later, he still speaks about sobriety in one-day-at-a-time terms rather than as something permanently completed.

His story fits well beside Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Hopkins: all three show how enormous parts of a life can be built after alcohol or drugs stop controlling it.
